Deacon’s Deli

Canterbury volunteers provide food assistance to members of our community through our Deacon’s Deli food ministry.  We give groceries (including frozen meat, dairy products, and fresh produce) to families in need.  During the growing season, we also provide vouchers to the Tuscaloosa Farmers Market.

Food assistance is available every Tuesday morning from 7:00am to 8:00am.  Participants do not need a referral. We operate with food from donations and that we purchase from the West Alabama Food Bank. Donations of food are always needed and gratefully accepted at the entrances to the chapel in the "Deacon's Deli" baskets. We are also supported by monetary donations.

Meals on Wheels

Canterbury’s Meals on Wheels food ministry supplements Tuscaloosa’s Monday through Friday program and serves over 160 meals to our neighbors who are not able to prepare their own food. Several cook teams rotate cooking on the fourth Sunday of each month. The teams gather at about 7:00am in the Student Center kitchen to prepare hot meals. By 9:00am food is packed in containers, and a team of drivers delivers these special packages into the community.

Flower Guild

The Canterbury Flower Guild is composed of interested members of the parish who arrange beautiful flowers to reflect the liturgical notes of our worship services each week.

Altar Guild

The Altar Guild makes sure the altar is set up for each service held in the chapel. Setup includes being certain the altar and church are clean and neat, the hymn board is accurate, all candle holders are free of wax, the purificators are clean and ironed, and that the altar colors are appropriate for the liturgical season.

  • Acolytes, Crucifers, Chalice Bearers, Intercessors, Readers, Thurifers, and Ushers

Trained lay volunteers assist the clergy in conducting the liturgy of the church.

  • Betak-Frangoulis Art Gallery

The gallery at Canterbury presents monthly exhibitions featuring the work of local visual artists and parishioners.

  • Music and Literature

From time to time, Canterbury hosts special concerts and offers study groups and public presentations that examine poetry and literature.

  • Student Suppers

Each Sunday evening during the academic year parishioners provide a home-cooked meal for students who attend the 5:00 pm service of Holy Eucharist.

  • Kairos

Kairos is a world-wide ministry that brings the love of God to people who are incarcerated. Canterburians participate in four-day programs at the Aliceville Federal Correctional Institution and at the Bibb County Correctional Facility.

  • Cursillo

Cursillo in the Diocese of Alabama focuses on helping Christian laypeople become effective Christian leaders over the course of a three-day weekend at Camp McDowell. The major emphasis of the weekend is to ask participants to take what they have learned back into the world. Those who complete a Cursillo weekend meet in weekly reunion groups to continue their spiritual development. Canterbury encourages parishioners to attend Cursillo weekends and provides meeting space for several Cursillo reunion groups.

  • Student Residences

Canterbury provides housing for University of Alabama students interested in living in an intentional Christian community. Single rooms are available for students in Murray House and in Gribbin House on the church grounds.
